ASL Interpreter

Hello! I'm Jolie Andersen, a recent graduate of the Interpreter Training Program at Palomar College here in San Diego, California. I have been studying American Sign Language since 2017 and graduated from UC San Diego with a BA in Theatre Arts and a minor in ASL Linguistic Studies. Over the years, I have studied the linguistic, performance, and cultural elements of the language and grown to appreciate them, not to mention the community that created the language. Working with the Deaf community through service learning and subsequent volunteer opportunities has been an enriching experience for me. Learning about new cultural norms and getting to know many individual's personal struggles with audism reinforced my desire to advocate for the Deaf community and their right to equal access.  I hope to continue to expand my knowledge and advocacy for many years to come.

Education & Professional Development

Over the last three years in my ITP program, I had the opportunity to participate in service learning, where I learned many important interpreting skills. I accumulated over 128 hours of interpreting, with the support of several mentors, at a variety of settings including museum tours, celebrations of life, conferences, art classes, summer camps, and many more.

I am continuing my education post-graduation by completing my EIPA certification and beginning my NIC certification path. Along with staying immersed in Deaf events, I plan to continue interpreting to improve my skills to achieve full NIC certification status.
